Mike completed his successful CMI presidency late last year. He has been the Non-Executive Chairman of Coats plc since September 2013 and Chairman of the consumer rights champion Which? since 2008. He is a Non Executive director of Serco and a former Non Executive Director of ITV, and was previously Chief Executive of BAA plc, Operating Managing Director at Terra Firma Capital Partners Limited and Chairman of HM Revenue and Customs. He has also held a number of senior executive positions at Procter & Gamble.

LEADERSHIP IN AN ORGANISATION, NOT JUST OF AN ORGANISATION

Three key themes

• The role of transferable skills in career development. Illustrated through my personal journey, with reflections on which skills are important and readily transferred to new roles/sectors.
• A focus on leading inside an organisation. The importance of the professional approach to management and leadership as opposed to the British ‘disease’ of the accidental manager. The ‘tripod’ model of trusting/tending /tasking in leading others.
• Early reflections on digital disruption outside the tech sector and how AI will impact leadership and accountability.
