Covid-19 has caused many of us to rethink our purpose in life, and even perhaps to internally reframe our thoughts regarding our fit for our current roles. So, looking beyond the familiar post-Covid discussions of remote work or mental health, it may be time to focus instead on the must-have attributes that will be critical for the roles of tomorrow.

Indeed, given that the jobs of the future will be greatly influenced by multiple new technologies – changing the work and business landscape forever – new recruits may well have to adapt in order to showcase some entirely new qualities.

We’re already familiar with the idea that employers may try to learn more about a candidate during recruitment by doing numerous profiling exercises to learn about their innate traits, skills and/or competencies relative to the role. Many higher education institutions prepare their graduates for this – indeed, CMI has already identified the skills that employers want from graduates right now and embedded them in its courses. However, we believe that a key area that is often missed is personal attributes: learned behaviours that are strong predictors of how someone will respond in a given situation.
