Which route is the right pathway for you?

Chartered Management Consultant is all about professional recognition and is the highest status that can be achieved in the management consulting profession. CMI offers various routes to achieving Chartered Management Consultant (ChMC) status; depending on an individual’s management consulting experience.

The CMI Professional Consulting Qualification (Level 5) Designed for Professional Consultants who want to develop their consultancy abilities, and who will have the knowledge, skills and behaviours to drive consultancy activities in a senior capacity.

The Level 5 Diploma in Professional Consulting has been designed to cover the Chartered level ChMC competencies. To apply for ChMC status, you must be ‘professionally active’. This means you:

  • Have 4+ years experience with a proven track record of delivering consultancy;
  • Are an exemplar of the profession, significantly contributing to the operational enhancement and commercial sustainability of the firm and its clients;
  • Have up-to-date knowledge of current practices and methods;
  • Are actively involved in the management consultancy profession.

For management consultants that have completed their organisation’s accredited ChMC programme. Consultants need to be ‘professionally active’. This means they:

  • Have 4+ years experience with a proven track record of delivering consultancy;
  • Are an exemplar of the profession, significantly contributing to the operational enhancement and commercial sustainability of the organisation and its clients;
  • Have up-to-date knowledge of current practices and methods;
  • Are actively involved in the management consultancy profession.

This route gives credit to experienced individuals for their prior learning and experience. Individuals applying through this route, would typically be highly experienced and accomplished Management Consultants.

Applicants considering the Experienced Professional route to ChMC are required to:

  • Be of good professional standing and have 5+ years experience in their role as a Management Consultant;
  • Demonstrate a prolonged performance above that expected of a newly appointed Chartered Management Consultant;
  • Demonstrate that they have the key competencies, as described within the Chartered Management Consultant Competency Framework;
  • Demonstrate ongoing skills and knowledge development, including the receiving of coaching and mentoring, to maintain their soft skills and continued professional development.

ChMC Assessment Process

The ChMC assessment process is the same for all routes to Chartered and comprises two stages.

You will be assessed against the ChMC competency framework. This consists of the following sections:

  • Values, Ethics and Behaviours - the profession must be grounded and rooted in a set of standards so that the award has at its very core a code of conduct and practice that enshrines core management consulting ethics, values and practices.
  • Leadership and management - one of the key characteristics that define successful management consultants is their ability to lead and manage effectively.
  • Client Operating Environment - Organisations expect their consultants to hold up to date technical and functional knowledge and be able to apply their understanding of a number of core subjects, for example, change management, operational improvement and so on. In addition, in order to operate effectively management consultants require specific, yet wide ranging, functional technical knowledge. Chartered Management Consultants must demonstrate capabilities in the following areas: industry or sector specialisms; clients and markets; strategy, analysis and insight; operational delivery (including technology enablement); stakeholder and relationship development.
  • Personal and Professional Development - There is an expectation that Chartered Management Consultants take responsibility for their own personal and professional development, developing a number of individual characteristics including inclusion and diversity, intellectual curiosity, intellectual flexibility, social and emotional intelligence, collaboration, influence and stakeholder relationship management.
ChMC Competency Framework

The written submission needs to be completed using the template provided within 3 months of application for assessment.

The written submission will be assessed and where it doesn’t meet the required standards the consultant will receive feedback and a request to submit additional supporting evidence within 14 days. Consultants have a maximum of 2 submission attempts. Where the written submission meets the criteria the consultant will be invited to a professional discussion.

ChMC Submission Top Tips

Following a successful stage one submission, a consultant will be invited to a professional discussion with an Assessor. All professional discussions are held remotely. The professional discussion will validate and explore experience. The Assessor will make their judgements based solely on the information in the submission and performance during the professional discussion.

Consultants will be contacted directly by their Assessor to arrange a convenient time for their professional discussion. Professional discussions will be recorded for quality assurance purposes with the consultant’s permission.

Retaining the ChMC Status

Once awarded ChMC status, consultants will be able to use the designation MCMI ChMC for as long as they remain a member of CMI. Membership is renewed annually.

As part of keeping their ChMC status, consultants are required to maintain a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) record. CPD is an important part of being a professional and allows consultants to look in two directions. It is an opportunity to reflect on what has affected their practice over the last 12 months and offers a chance to identify what they need to develop over the coming year.

How consultants record their CPD is a matter of personal choice, however it is important that it identifies;

  • What development activities have been undertaken/are planned
  • Why those CPD activities were chosen
  • How has this affected the consultants practice/will affect practice
  • How has the learning been shared with others

Consultants should aim to record and plan between 3 and 5 meaningful activities per 12 months.
