How the bursary works

In order to be eligible for the bursary, you must have either identified or have confirmed enrollment on a CMI qualification at a CMI approved centre. The bursary money can either be paid directly to you to help towards course-related expenses, or directly to the centre providing the training towards the cost of the qualification.

Who the bursary is for

All applicants will be assessed against our eligibility criteria, which can be downloaded in full.

The bursary is split into three awards. Detailed below are the awards and those who are eligible to apply for each:

  • Map to Management award: For those who aspire to be a manager, or find themselves in an entry level role
  • Next generation award: For those in a junior management role
  • Pathway to progression award: For those who have 3+ years of management experience

As well as:

  • Be aged 18 years old or above
  • Will be a resident in the UK and proposing to take a CMI accredited Course in the UK
  • Will maintain active membership of CMI from the date of their course and for 5 years afterwards, in order to ensure potential eligibility for Chartered Manager status at the end of the bursary period and to monitor the impact of the scheme

The Bursary is split into three offerings:

Map to Management Award:

An award for those who aspire to be a manager, or find themselves in an entry level role. The applicant should have no formal management and leadership qualification.

Next Generation Award:

An award for those who find themselves in a junior management position. The applicant should have no formal management and leadership qualification, or is looking to progress their existing qualification to a higher level.

Pathway to Progression Award:

An award for those who have 3+ years experience in management. The applicant should have no formal management and leadership qualification, or is looking to progress their existing qualification to a higher level.

The bursary is split into three awards. Detailed below are the awards and those who are eligible to apply for each:

  • Map to Management Award: For those who aspire to be a manager, or find themselves in an entry level role
  • Next Generation Award: For those in a junior management role
  • Pathway to Progression Award: For those who have 3+ years of management experience

Applications will be assessed considering a personal statement and equal opportunities

The CMI management bursary offers up to £1000, per year for a maximum of three years. The money will be used to support CMI qualifications delivered by CMI approved centres. The money can either be paid directly to you to help support course related expenses, or to the centre providing the training towards the cost of the qualification.

Alongside the bursary, you will receive complimentary affiliate membership from the start date of your course and for a further 5 years after you complete. You will be encouraged to establish a mentoring relationship to help you succeed and to make use of CMI’s community of experienced managers and leaders to guide you through your training.

CMI qualifications are designed in consultation with employers to develop the skills needed to succeed. Study through one of over 600 CMI Approved Learning Centres offering our range of qualifications at levels 2 through to 8.

The application process is online and you will be guided through the process, applicants will be expected to submit:

  • Information about yourself
  • Information about your identified course, including duration of study, CMI approved centre, level and name of qualification
  • Information on your eligibility, including details of any grants/bursaries previously applied for
  • A personal statement of no more than 500 words describing how the award will develop your leadership and management skills.

Every applicant will receive a response as to whether their application has been successful or not. They may also be contacted and asked any further questions about their application. Applicants will not be contacted before the close date of 31st May. The bursary awards will be announced on the 30th June, so applicants can expect not to hear a response until after this date.

Every applicant who applies will receive a response as to whether their application has been successful or not. CMI’s decision is final and unfortunately it won't be possible to give detailed feedback to all.

If you are awarded the bursary we will send you an offer email detailing the terms and conditions of the award and asking you to complete an acceptance form. Once you have completed the form, we will process the payment to your chosen training provider.
