Equality of opportunity is something close to the heart of Justine Greening, former secretary of state for education and minister for women and equalities – and co-founder of the Social Mobility Pledge and Levelling Up Goals. “More people with more opportunities … means more businesses, more opportunity and more prosperity. So equality of opportunity is the most important thing other than net zero that we need to achieve here in the UK.”

Achieving equality of opportunity starts with “levelling up, by extending opportunities to people who don't have them,” Justine explained in a recent CMI Leading Lights interview. In particular Justine highlighted access to mentoring and networks as vital for improving social mobility and lack of opportunity in the workplace for people from lower socio-economic groups.

In our 75th anniversary year, CMI is determined to help overcome the barriers to entering management. This is why in March 2022 we launched a bursary scheme offering 75 inspirational aspiring managers, whose circumstances may otherwise prevent them from doing so, the opportunity to develop their management and leadership skills and achieve their professional goals.
